You are invited to take part in a research study on AI-supported helping-skills training. Participation is voluntary and separate from your normal use of SHIFT.

If you enroll, the study will collect: the full text of your practice conversations with the simulated client; per-turn competency scores, feedback, and coaching hints; the lessons, examples, and orientation pages you view; your self-rated check-ins; timings and usage information; your intake answers (role, experience, country, language); and your login identity, linked to a pseudonymous participant ID.

Data are used for research — including analysis and publication in aggregate, de-identified form. As always, never enter real client, patient, or personally identifying information in practice conversations.

You may stop participating at any time by leaving the study in Settings or emailing hello@shiftglobal.ai; data already collected may be retained as part of the study record. Declining does not affect your access to SHIFT.

What PM+ is. Problem Management Plus (PM+) is a brief psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization for adults impaired by distress in communities exposed to adversity. It is transdiagnostic — it helps with low mood, stress, and practical problems without requiring a diagnosis — and it was designed to be delivered by trained, supervised non-specialist helpers.

Who it serves. Adults experiencing distress and difficulty functioning — commonly in humanitarian, post-conflict, or low-resource settings, and equally applicable in high-income community settings. PM+ is not for people with imminent suicide risk, severe mental disorder, or needs that require specialist or medical care — those situations are referred, not managed.

Your role and its boundaries. As a PM+ helper you deliver a defined set of strategies, collaboratively and in plain language. You do not diagnose, prescribe, process trauma memories, or improvise new techniques. When something is beyond scope — risk, safeguarding, severe illness — you follow your site's referral pathway. Supervision is part of the model, not an optional extra.

The intervention's structure. PM+ runs as five weekly sessions of about 90 minutes, after a pre-intervention assessment. Session 1 educates the client about PM+ and common reactions to adversity, then teaches Managing Stress (slow breathing). Session 2: Managing Problems — deliberately called management, not solving, because many problems in adversity can't be solved, only made lighter. Session 3: Get Going, Keep Doing (reversing the inactivity cycle). Session 4: Strengthening Social Support. Session 5: Staying Well and Looking Forward. Each strategy, once introduced, is briefly reviewed and reinforced in every later session — the client leaves owning all of them.

Safety and referral requirements. Every PM+ contact includes attention to risk. If a client signals thoughts of self-harm, you check directly and calmly, and you escalate through the referral pathway when there is a plan, intent, or anything beyond your scope. Confidentiality is explained at the start and has exactly three limits: supervision, a plan to end one's life, and risk of harm to someone else — and when it must be broken, you tell the client first and frame it as bringing in more support. In this practice track, the simulated clients will sometimes give you exactly those cues.

How PM+ relates to the Core Skills. The SHIFT Core Skills — empathy and rapport, open questions, psychoeducation, safety checking, action planning — are the foundation under every PM+ strategy. In this track you are assessed on both, separately: your general helping competence and your fidelity to the PM+ strategy itself. A warm conversation that skips the strategy's essential steps is not fidelity; a mechanical script that ignores the person is not competence. The goal is both.

How the track works. For each strategy: Learn the steps → Observe strong and weak demonstrations → practice with Guided support (hints, starters, live feedback) → practice Independent (no coaching — feedback only at the end) → take the Assessment (a locked scenario, no hints or retries, flagged for supervisor review).

Training note: real PM+ helpers complete a multi-day classroom training followed by supervised in-field practice cases before certification. This track teaches and assesses delivery skills with simulated clients — it is practice, not certification, and it complements (never replaces) formal PM+ training, supervision, and your organization's clinical governance.

AI-generated feedback may be incomplete or inaccurate and should be reviewed with appropriate supervision or training guidance.

To evaluate and improve the pilot, SHIFT records your session results — scores, competency levels, module, timing, and usage information, together with your login identity. The text of your practice conversations is not recorded; transcripts stay on your device.
